For direct entry into university after Year 12 students need to be undertaking Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR) courses in Year 11 and 12. A rank is given to each student taking the best 4 subjects that they have studied in Year 12.
Armadale Senior High School offers the following ATAR courses and further details can be found in the Upper School Handbook.
English (ATAR)
The English (ATAR) course builds on reading, writing, listening, viewing and speaking skills that students have learnt in lower school. It focuses on developing students’ analytical, creative, critical thinking and communication skills in all language modes. It encourages students to critically engage with texts from their contemporary world and with texts from the past to help develop a sense of themselves, their world and their place in it. Students also create their own imaginative and persuasive texts and write analytical responses to texts of others.
Geography (ATAR)
Geography (ATAR) is ideal for students curious about the world, enjoy solving problems, and are interested in a future that involves making a positive impact on the world. Students studying Geography (ATAR) will typically be interested in travel and exploring different cultures; science and the natural world; understanding global issues and their local impacts; and environmental conservation and sustainability.
Mathematics Applications (ATAR)
This course focuses on the use of mathematics to solve problems in contexts that involve financial modelling, geometric and trigonometric analysis, graphical and network analysis, and growth and decay in sequences. It also provides opportunities for students to develop systematic strategies based on the statistical investigation process for answering statistical questions that involve analysing univariate and bivariate data, including time series data.
Human Biology (ATAR)
Human Biology (ATAR) focuses on what it is to be human, relating the human body structure to function and exploring how humans survive a changing environment. Students who are interested science, how the human body works and in furthering their study at a tertiary level will enjoy this course.
